The Detectability of AGN Cavities in Cooling-Flow Clusters
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chandra X-ray Observatory has revealed X-ray cavities in many nearby cooling flow clusters. The cavities trace feedback from the central active galactic nulceus (AGN) on the intracluster medium (ICM), an important ingredient in stabilizing cooling flows and in the process of galaxy formation and evolution. But, the prevalence and duty cycle of such AGN outbursts is not well understood. To this end, we study how the cooling is balanced by the cavity heating for a complete sample of clusters (the Brightest 55 clusters of galaxies, hereafter B55). In the B55, we found 33 cooling flow clusters (with tcool < 3×109 yr in the core), 20 of which have detected X-ray bubbles in their ICM. Among the remaining 13, all except Ophiuchus could have significant cavity power yet remain undetected in existing images. This implies that the duty cycle of AGN outbursts with significant heating potential in cooling flow clusters is at least 60% and could approach 100%, but deeper data is required to constrain this further.

Cooling Flows or Heating Flows?
It is now clear that AGN heat cooling flows, largely by driving winds. The winds may contain a relativistic component that generates powerful synchrotron radiation, but it is not clear that all winds do so. The spatial and temporal stability of the AGN/cooling flow interaction are discussed. Collimation of the winds probably provides spatial stability. Temporal stability may be possible only fo...
متن کاملThe Growth of Black Holes and Bulges at the Cores of Cooling Flows
The intracluster medium (ICM) at the center of a majority of galaxy clusters has a cooling time less than 10 yr [1]. In the absence of a source of heat, this gas should cool, resulting in a slow inward flow of material know as a “cooling flow”. However, recent high-resolution X-ray spectra from XMMNewton do not show the features expected if large amounts of gas are cooling below kT ∼ 2 keV [2]....

Using broadband optical imaging and Chandra X-ray data for a sample of 46 cluster central dominant galaxies (CDGs), we investigate the connection between star formation, the intracluster medium (ICM), and the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). We report the discovery of a remarkably sharp threshold for the onset of star formation that occurs when the central cooling time of the hot atmosphe...

We use broadband optical imaging and Chandra X-ray data for a sample of 47 cluster central dominant galaxies (CDGs) to investigate the connection between star formation, the intracluster medium (ICM), and the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). By comparing the near-UV color gradients to the X–ray-derived properties on similar spatial scales, we find that a CDG is likely to experience signif...
متن کاملSimulations of Hot Bubbles in the Icm
We review the general properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in clusters that host a cooling flow, and in particular the effects on the ICM of the injection of hot plasma by a powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN). It is observed that, in some cases, the hot plasma produces cavities in the ICM that finally detach and rise, perhaps buoyantly. The gas dynamics induced by the rising bubbles ...
